In 1963, Kilkenny Design Workshops (KDW) was established by the Government to nurture Irish craft makers and develop create a sustainable design sector. In 2021 Kilkenny engaged Ten Storey to create a campaign to honour its heritage.
Back in the 1960s designers and craftspeople from all over Ireland were asked to relocate to Kilkenny town, where they shared skills, and worked collaboratively to build links with industry and grow the market for Irish design and manufacture. International designers were headhunted to share their expertise with these new Irish designers and trainees revolutionising design in Ireland. We delved into this rich history and reinstate part of its original name and heritage (KDW) to recognise its achievement. We developed a new wordmark for Kilkenny, and suite of classic and contemporary design assets to be rolled out internally across its 18 stores in Ireland.
